I have been enjoying Mark Reps' series of Zeb Hanks books very much, but was in a quandary about this one. There are two types of books I don't care to read. Those are about the Mafia or the Mexican drug cartels. My experience has been that I don't like the overload of violence and the way these organizations are glorified. If I come across a book that has either in the plot, I don't want to read it. Now I was faced with a choice. I could read the next book in the series despite my objections, or I could skip this book and hope I wouldn't have too much trouble tying in what happened in the previous book with book number five in the series. I decided to read Native Justice despite my objections. I'm very happy that I did so. I wasn't totally surprised at the ending, but I enjoyed the journey getting there. I had some instances where I had to suspend my disbelief a little more than I was used to, but it was worth it. Good job Mr. Reps. On to the next.Product details

NATIVE JUSTICE ZEB HANKS SMALL TOWN SHERIFF BIG TIME TROUBLE Book 4 edition by Mark Reps Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I really am enjoying this series of books and will continue to finish all the books I still have on my list to read. This is first series I have been reading by the Author Mark Reps.. I would give all the saeries I have read 4 Stars..Alice
It starts out killing one of the main characters, and another one late on. I like the characters so much, I almost stop reading to grieve. But I kept reading and really got into the tale. Another fine book from Mr. Reps. (Just please stop killing the characters I like.)
The story begins with an event hoped for by fans of the previous Zeb Hanks novels, but we hardly could have known how far away from that happy occasion we would be taken to solve a horrific crime. Jaw-dropping losses and surprising revelations left me wondering if Sheriff Hanks could possibly be the same man going forward. We will learn that, I hope, in the next volume. The author is a superb story-teller, so much so that I felt this one physically. It was taut and unflinching, with the ending that we came to need just as much as Zeb.
This was a book I nearly didn't read. I have read others in this series and the characters were shallow. Much like watching old "Gun Smoke" reruns. However, I like police novels and the Southwest so I gave it another try. This author really doesn't know how to write a female characters. Doreen was irritating and an insult to intelligent working women. Details like Zeb is a Mormon don't seem to tie to anything else and detract from the flow. But this installment of the series has an improved plot, Zeb, becomes more complex, and the Tribal subplot is interesting. Maybe there is hope and maybe author Reps will read 'Writing the Life of a Woman".
This is not a tale of the life of sheriff Zeb Hanks as he upholds the law. This; however, is the tale of Zeb Hanks as he repeatedly breaks the law and puts his own life at stake to avenge the brutal murder of his wife. The reader follows Zeb as he assumes a new identity and enters the world of drug trafficking with human trafficking thrown in. He quickly works his way up the ladder of success as he wheels and deals as an underworld criminal. His goal is to personally find and execute the man that he believes brutally murdered his wife. As a law enforcement officer, Zeb never has plans to bring the murderer to justice in a lawful manner.
Even though they know Zeb is on a mission of personal vendetta, the sheriff's department and a member of the FBI support and aid him. His adventures/misadventures in the crime underworld may assist them in bringing down the cartel. This is much like a diary as Zeb lies, wheels and deals and tries to outmaneuver others in the world of illegal drugs, forced prostitution, murder and mayhem. Along the way, the reader learns that even though Zeb is full of hatred and is still deeply mourning he has human weaknesses that he gives in to. It gets a bit soap opera ish at times.
The reader may be in for a surprise ending after following Zeb on a fairly predictable journey. The ending leaves the reader wondering what the future of Zeb Hanks, the small town sheriff, will be. The book was entertaining; however, I did not find it to be the suspenseful tale that I had hoped for.
I find the characters to be a bit thin and the author has a tendency to keep repeating information a couple of time within a few pages of the original text, this is done by having the character rehash information word for word almost from text from a few pages earlier, this is totally unnecessary and makes the story drag. I will read all of the series since I bought them all, but in my opinion a rather mediocre read.
I've read all of the Zeb Hank's stories, to date. I have found most of them enjoyable, most of the time. I do think the character is a bit derivative of Craig Johnson's "Walt Longmire" with similar casting and typical staff relationships. The parallels can't be wholly coincidental. I wouldn't call any of the stories, so far, great reading....but the writing is clear and the plot outlines do hold together. You do become attached to the characters, and they do come to life in the stories.
In this particular episode, Zeb goes a bit "rogue" to avenge his wife's death. Although I'm willing to suspend belief about several things, I find it hard to image an Arizona cowboy picking up the art of fencing so rapidly, and so astutely, as to mortally wound a much more experienced opponent. I was taking the plot seriously, until this closing episode intervened. If the resolution had been a little less far-fetched, I would have given it 4 stars.
